I am so excited to have a very full advanced placement art program this year. We have 17 students in our class and they worked very hard last year to be included in this program. At the end of last year, each student was required to take a shoebox and create a piece of artwork inspired by one of their favorite artists. They could manipulate the shoebox anyway they chose and WOW did we have some fabulous projects. I can't wait to see the amazing art these students produce this year.
Can you guess their inspiration?

The art classroom is officially going strong! We have 4 very full classes this year which is so exciting. We've even started our very first project (I'll have pictures soon). I have 17 students in my AP Studio Art class. We are going to be busting at the seams with art! So stay tuned to this blog as I will be posting much of the students work right here. Here's to a creative year!
Students love when we start working on sculpture projects! After studying about Edgar Degas and his sculptures we dove right into our very own sculpture projects. I started the project off by doing a step by step example of a ballet dancer. The sculptures are made from a wire armature, paper from magazines, masking tape and plaster wrap. Here are a few in progress:
We have a student artshow up at Scotts Valley Artisans! This is a collaborative show of including 23 pieces of work done by 18 of the Cypress art students. The show is up through April 15th.
One of the most inspirational women artists is definitely Georgia O'Keeffe. Students studied about her art life and her art. The student paintings will be in the office on display through the month of April. The painting below is a wonderful example of the project...this one is by Marco Toro.
The students were introduced to the work of Gustave Klimt. We were so inspired by his use of patterns and gold. Using his Tree of Life Series as inspiration, the students painted their own Tree's of Life. The finished work has been hanging in the office so I hope you have had a chance to see them! Here are a few finished pieces from our talented art students:
Currently we have three mural projects going on campus. The advanced students and a couple of the Art 1 students are working on these fabulous murals and we are pushing to be finished by the first of May. Here are a couple of "in progress" photos:
One of the most difficult tasks to accomplish in art is a self portrait. We are most critical of our own work especially when we are trying to depict an image that looks like us. We also studied portraits from Chuck Close and Frieda Kahlo before beginning. The students did great and learned how to use watercolor and charcoal together.

Meet Mrs. Mort
So excited to enter my 4th year at Cypress Charter H.S.! This is my 15th year of teaching high school art. Before teaching my sole career was painting--that of course was loads of fun but I find much more joy in passing on my love of art to my students. When I'm not in the classroom, you will find me hiking, traveling, spending time with family, making something and drinking tea...lots of tea. If you are on campus, stop in and say hello. Archives
